At St Andrew’s Cathedral School, learning extends well beyond the classroom. Through a wide range of immersive educational tours, students are given the opportunity to experience the world around them—bringing academic study to life, while fostering independence, curiosity and a truly international perspective.
The 2025 European History Tour is just one recent example of a tour bringing learning to life in powerful and memorable ways, with students journeying across three countries and more than two thousand years of history.
Over 17 days, students travelled from the ancient streets of Rome to the battlefields of the Somme, gaining firsthand insight into the people, places and events that have shaped our world.
In Rome, students explored iconic landmarks including the Pantheon, Colosseum, Roman Forum and Vatican City, where they wondered at Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. Visits to Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii provided a tangible connection to the ancient world and to their studies.
“Seeing Pompeii was a dream come true. Getting to visit a site I will study for the HSC will really strengthen my understanding,” said Year 11 student, Jacob.
The tour then moved to Germany, where students explored the complexities of modern history. In Munich, visits to Dachau Concentration Camp and the Nazi Documentation Centre provided a confronting but important perspective on the Holocaust.
In Berlin, guided by a local expert, the group visited key landmarks including the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Wall and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, as well as Cold War sites such as Checkpoint Charlie.
“The Berlin Bunker Museum helped to reveal the true horror and tragedy of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust,” Jacob said.
In France, students experienced both the cultural richness of Paris and the solemnity of the Western Front. After visits to Versailles and Montmartre, the group travelled to the Somme. At the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux and the Sir John Monash Centre, they reflected on the sacrifices of those who served in World War I, bringing a deeply personal dimension to their learning.
Beyond academic growth, the tour fostered meaningful friendships and shared experiences.
“We learned together, laughed together and supported each other through the emotional parts. Sharing the experience with friends made it unforgettable,” said Year 11 student, Cassidy.
Opportunities like this are part of a broader approach to secondary education at St Andrew’s Cathedral School.
