Leading with infinite worth: Dr Julie McGonigle’s unique approach to leadership

For Dr Julie McGonigle, Head of St Andrew’s Cathedral School, leadership begins with a deceptively simple question: What kind of people are our students going to become?

Academic results matter. So do excellent teaching, university pathways and the skills young people need to navigate a rapidly changing world. But for Dr McGonigle, these are not the destination. They are part of a larger purpose: helping young people discover who they are, recognise their gifts and understand how they can contribute to the world around them.

At the heart of her approach is a conviction shaped by her Christian faith: every child is infinitely precious. Each student has inherent worth, a unique contribution to make and a purpose beyond achievement alone.

That belief changes the way leadership looks. Rather than viewing a school primarily through results, targets and performance, Dr McGonigle sees it as a community of people. Teachers are encouraged to know their students deeply, students are challenged to persevere and aim high, and families are invited to partner with the School in the journey of learning.

It is an approach that holds important things together: academic excellence and wellbeing, tradition and innovation, intellectual growth and spiritual development, individual achievement and service to others.

For Dr McGonigle, education is also about helping young people wrestle with the bigger questions of life. Who am I? What do I believe? What is worth pursuing? How should I respond to people who see the world differently? And what kind of future do I want to help create?

These questions have particular significance in a world shaped by artificial intelligence, rapid technological change and increasing complexity. Knowledge alone is not enough. Young people need confidence, curiosity, character and a sense of possibility.

That may be the most distinctive feature of Dr McGonigle’s leadership: she looks beyond what students achieve to who they are becoming.

At St Andrew’s Cathedral School, academic progress is ultimately about people — and success is measured not only by what students know when they leave, but by the confidence, purpose and hope they carry with them into the world beyond the School gates.

The best way to understand what makes St Andrew’s Cathedral School unique is to experience it firsthand. We invite you to join a Head of School tour, where you will see our classrooms in action, meet our passionate educators and discover how we support every student to thrive.
