INSPIRING SOCIAL CHANGE THROUGH FILM

Hero

Camberwell Girls Grammar School (CGGS) has continued a legacy of success that began in 2021. In a remarkable achievement, CGGS students have won both the Junior and Senior categories of the 2023 Videos for Change competition, with the Senior category victory marking a three-year winning streak. The National competition challenged high school students to create one-minute videos on social issues. With over 300 entries in 2023, four CGGS teams stood out from the crowd and made it to the finals.

Our students’ videos received acclaim from a panel of industry experts, including executives from the Nine Network and BBC, Youtubers and storytellers. Notably, Year 11 student Heidi L, part of CGGS’s 2022 winning team, was invited to join this year’s illustrious panel.

Ellie Y and Sophie L from Year 8, with their video “Freefall,” highlighted the importance of self-worth beyond academic grades, earning a place in the Junior Top 10 Finalists. “The Little Things” by Year 11 students Grace B, Samantha F, Sara R, Ishana S and Helena M delved into the importance of appreciating life’s simpler moments and achieved Senior Top 10 Finalist status.

The creators of “Overshadowing,” Vivienne T, Emily W and Claire P from Year 8, won the Junior category, impressing Kylie Washington, General Manager and Creative Director at BBC Studios ANZ, with their emotionally resonant and mature content. In the Senior category, Year 11 student Joanne T’s “miasma”, a visually vibrant yet thought-provoking exploration of greenhouse gas emissions, took the top spot, captivating judges, including Producer and Author Briony Benjamin, who praised its industry-level standard.

Our winning filmmakers travelled to Sydney in December 2023 where they were honoured at an award ceremony in the Great Hall of the University of Technology Sydney. They represented CGGS with pride and spoke eloquently in front of a large audience about the motivations and intentions behind their work.
