High-performance sport at De La Salle College, Malvern

De La Salle

De La Salle College, Malvern, offers an extensive range of co-curricular opportunities to complement classroom learning. Introduced in early 2022, the college’s High-Performance Sport program provides students from Years 5 to 12 the opportunity to experience specialist coaching and mentoring from industry professionals in a variety of sports.

The High-Performance AFL program is a litany of well-known AFL footballers and coaches, including Andrew Raines (founder of One on One Football, former AFL player and Gold Coast Suns Academy head coach), Michael Barlow (former Freemantle and Gold Coast Suns AFL player), Brett Deledio (former Richmond and Greater Western Sydney AFL player), Dom Tyson (former Greater Western Sydney, Melbourne and North Melbourne AFL player) and Shane Watson (former Collingwood AFL player).

This season saw the results of such high-performance tuition and coaching, including the senior De La Salle AFL team winning the Associated Catholic Colleges (ACC) premiership.

The Open golf team, Year 8A soccer team and Year 8B AFL team were also 2022 premiers and there has been a notable upsurge in the college players’ skills, commitment and results.

De La Salle 2

If your son loves sport or is keen to improve his sporting prowess or desire to be supported in high-performance-level sports, De La Salle offers a selection of sports commencing at Year 5 that seamlessly continue into secondary year levels with strong support from coaches and sports coordinators.

It’s important that students enjoy their sports and have the opportunity to identify their strengths and weaknesses in a variety of sports options, so that they enter Year 7 with a sense of confidence. The Year 5 and 6 primary students had a fun and successful 2022 with the Primary Sport program. Term 1 commenced with a six-week Harold Holt swim program, closely followed by the Dendy Sports program in Term 2 that included weekly AFL, netball and soccer. The Year 5 netball team won their Grand Final, while Year 6 netball and AFL were runners-up in their respective competitions.

In Term 3, primary students competed in the Basketball Victoria Hoop Time tournament with outstanding results. Primary students also had the wonderful experience of touring the MCG, speaking with Sydney 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Dean Pullar, and also attended fitness classes at Harold Holt and Infinite Cycles.

This holistic approach to sports is the pathway to students having even greater opportunities in secondary school to consider high-performance teams including the Kennedy Club, the De La
Salle Dolphins, Agar Academy for cricket and the Di Medio athletics squad.
