NEGS appoints new principal to drive future-ready vision

Sharyn Baddeley

New England Girls’ School in Armidale has appointed an experienced educational leader to guide the independent Anglican school into its next chapter.

New England Girls’ School (NEGS) in Armidale, NSW, has appointed Sharyn Baddeley as its new principal, drawing on her experience in Australian and international education leadership.

Mrs Baddeley will take up the position in 2027, leading the independent Anglican girls’ school as it builds on its 131-year history while preparing students for the future.

Her career has included leadership roles at Melbourne’s Lauriston Girls’ School and international schools in Beijing, China, and Florence, Italy.

Mrs Baddeley spent nearly eight years at Lauriston before leaving in 2017 to take up a middle school leadership position at an international school in Beijing. During her time at Lauriston, she served as Head of Sport and Mitchell Head of House.

In announcing her departure, Lauriston praised her initiative and commitment to students, highlighting her work establishing the school’s sports office and organising a fundraising challenge for Very Special Kids.

Mrs Baddeley later became head of the International Bilingual School in Beijing, which catered for students from early years to Grade 12, before taking up the head of school position at the International School of Florence in July 2022.

Her international experience included leading a school through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including staffing disruptions caused by international border closures. She has also spoken about the importance of visible leadership and building relationships with students, staff and families.

Peter Moffitt, chairman of the NEGS Ltd Board, said the school sought a leader who could respect its traditions while guiding its future direction.

“Our 131-year history in Armidale has given us a strong, proud foundation built on community, integrity, and resilience,” Mr Moffitt said.

“We were conscious of the need to appoint a leader who brings the experience and capability to lead NEGS into its next chapter, while understanding and respecting the values, traditions and distinctive character that have shaped our School for generations.”

NEGS caters for day and boarding students, with opportunities across academic learning, sport, equestrian activities and the creative arts.

The school’s priorities include individual attention, high academic expectations and pastoral care, alongside opportunities for students to explore their interests and develop confidence. Its longstanding traditions, alumni network and community are also central to its approach.

Mr Moffitt said the school was committed to preserving its distinctive character while building on its strengths.

“We are committed to preserving what makes NEGS special while building upon the School’s strengths and preparing it confidently for generations to come,” he said.
