Before the announcement of her retirement, former Barker student Alyssa Healy reflected on a remarkable cricketing journey, one defined by resilience, leadership and some of the sport’s most memorable moments.
Appointed as the seventh Captain of the Australian Women’s National Cricket Team across all formats in December 2023, Healy’s career has been marked by both individual brilliance and team success. Among her many achievements are being named ICC T20 Player of the Year in 2018, delivering a Player of the Match performance in Australia’s 2020 T20 World Cup Final victory over India at the MCG, and an extraordinary innings of 170 against England in Christchurch in 2022.
For Healy, that World Cup triumph remains a defining highlight. Playing before a crowd of 87,000 at the MCG, just days before global shutdowns due to COVID-19, the moment stands as a powerful reminder of sport’s ability to unite and inspire.
While she relishes all formats of the game, Healy speaks with particular affection for Test cricket, valuing its rarity and the challenge it presents. Fierce rivalries especially those with India and England, have also shaped her career, alongside memorable tours to destinations such as New Zealand, the United Kingdom and India.
