In February, Loreto College Coorparoo students presented six spectacular performances of the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast. Under the direction of Curriculum Leader – Creative Arts, Stephanie Tudor, and with only eight weeks of rehearsal, students worked with extraordinary commitment and enthusiasm to bring this beloved Broadway musical to life.
Beauty and the Beast showcased far more than an outstanding school production. It highlighted the exceptional learning experiences available to students through creative arts at Loreto College Coorparoo. Bringing together 120 students across cast, crew and orchestra, the production demonstrated how authentic, industry-informed opportunities empower young people to develop confidence, creativity and professional skills while producing work of an exceptional standard.
At Loreto, students are immersed in experiences that mirror the professional world of theatre. Working alongside Music Director, Josh McKechie, students performed complex musical arrangements to a professional standard. Under the guidance of Vocal Director, Natalie Richards, performers strengthened their vocal technique, ensemble skills and stagecraft while gaining valuable insight into the discipline required of professional performers.
The rehearsal process also provided students with the opportunity to learn from accomplished alumni. Past pupil, Loreto dance instructor and choreographer, Paige Paremain (2016), worked closely with performers to create dynamic and engaging choreography, sharing her industry experience and inspiring students around her creative journey beyond Loreto. These interactions saw students experience first-hand the collaboration, resilience and high expectations that define professional theatre practice.
The production further embraced cutting-edge theatrical technology, with premier projections designed by StageScape Productions, David Horne, transforming the performance space into an immersive and ever-changing world. Students had the rare opportunity to perform within a production environment enhanced by industry-leading digital projection design, exposing them to contemporary theatre practices and demonstrating how digital innovation can elevate storytelling.
These authentic learning experiences culminated in performances that captivated audiences with their professionalism, artistry and joy. From intricate musical arrangements and vibrant choreography to seamless backstage operations and breathtaking visual effects, every aspect of the production reflected the dedication of Loreto students, supported by a passionate team of staff, alumni and industry professionals.
