Beyond the Classroom: Enriching Education Through Camps and Co-Curricular Programs at Maharishi School, Reservoir

Maharishi School

At Maharishi School, we believe education is about far more than academic achievement alone. It is about nurturing confident, capable and compassionate young people who feel connected to themselves, to others and to the world around them. Every aspect of school life is designed with intention — including the experiences that take place beyond the classroom.

At the heart of our educational philosophy is the understanding that children learn best when they feel calm, settled and secure within themselves. Through the integration of Consciousness-Based Education and the Science of Creative Intelligence (SCI), we actively support the development of self-awareness, resilience and emotional wellbeing. As part of our Consciousness-Based Education approach, students participate in a simple daily meditation program that helps calm the mind and improve clarity and concentration.

Through SCI, students are introduced to universal principles such as “the nature of life is to grow,” encouraging them to understand their own potential and approach learning with confidence and optimism. When children feel balanced and confident, their curiosity naturally expands. They become more willing to explore new ideas, take positive risks and engage deeply with learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.

We recognise that children are growing up in a world that is constantly evolving, and we believe education must prepare them not only academically, but personally and socially for the future ahead. Alongside strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, we place great importance on developing creative thinking, flexibility, collaboration and empathy; skills that will help students adapt and thrive in an ever-changing world. Through inquiry-based learning, collaborative projects, co-curricular experiences and our Consciousness-Based Education approach, students learn to think independently, communicate effectively, work respectfully with others and approach challenges with confidence and resilience.

We encourage students to be curious, adaptable and open-minded, while also developing a strong sense of self and connection to those around them. These qualities help prepare young people not simply for future careers, but for meaningful, balanced and purposeful lives.

Our camps and co-curricular programs are a natural extension of our Consciousness-Based Education approach. They provide students with opportunities to challenge themselves, build meaningful relationships and develop the inner confidence that supports lifelong learning and personal growth.

Experiential learning plays an important role in this journey. Our recent school camp to Portsea gave students the opportunity to participate in activities such as high ropes, flying fox, raft building and geocaching. These experiences encouraged students to step beyond their comfort zones, work collaboratively, solve problems creatively and build trust in themselves and others. For many children, these moments become lasting memories that strengthen resilience, independence and self-belief.

Beyond camps, students are offered a rich range of co-curricular opportunities that support the development of the whole child. Sport programs, including athletics, interschool sports, swimming, gymnastics and indoor sports, encourage students to build confidence, teamwork, coordination and resilience while developing healthy lifelong habits.

Creative arts programs, including choir, visual art and screenwriting, nurture imagination, self-expression and creativity, while community and cultural initiatives such as National Reconciliation Week, Harmony Week and Peace Week help students develop empathy, kindness and a deeper appreciation of diversity and connection within the wider community. Together, these experiences provide students with meaningful opportunities to discover their strengths, pursue their interests and grow in confidence both socially and personally.

Importantly, these programs are not viewed as extras, but as valuable parts of a balanced education. They enrich classroom learning while helping children discover their strengths, interests and sense of purpose. Students are encouraged to learn deeply, relate positively to others and enjoy the process of learning itself.

At Maharishi School, every child is truly seen and supported to flourish in their own way. Through meaningful experiences both within and beyond the classroom, students develop not only strong academic foundations, but also the confidence, clarity and resilience they need to navigate life with assurance and optimism.
