CENTENARY STATE HIGH SCHOOL

Centenary State High School is a highly regarded co-educational school of over 1200 students, located in the Centenary Suburbs in Brisbane’s west. The school is only 14 kilometres from the city centre, close to universities and major public transport routes. Centenary State High School is a high-demand school set amongst natural bushland yet close to all the amenities of Brisbane city. Its modern buildings, including state of the art sports and performing arts facilities, support an innovative learning environment.

As a large secondary school with a dedicated teaching staff the school is able to offer a full range of quality programs and pathways to ensure individual student needs and interests are met. Electives Years 11 and 12: In Years 11 and 12, students choose to study 6 subjects from a range of Queensland Studies Authority subjects. An English subject is compulsory and the school highly recommends choosing a Mathematics subject. Students also choose 4 other subjects from the 38 on offer.

Sport: Centenary SHS is a school that prides itself on its commitment to quality sporting competitions and opportunities for all. This comes from a deeply held belief that physical activity is essential for the physical, social and emotional well-being of our students.

Extracurricular activities: School Carnivals, Sport Cluster Days, Specific Sports Squads, Inter-School Sport, Choir and Instrumental Music, musical productions, Dance, Drama, Media, Art exhibitions.

STEP (Student Enrichment Program): Years 7 to 10 students at Centenary SHS participate in a range of recreational, sporting, cultural and other activities every Wednesday, during Lesson 4. STEP provides three pathways for students to get involved in extracurricular activities:

  • Interschool Sport – students train and prepare for participation in the District Sports days against other schools in our district.
  • School Production – students become involved in all aspects of the annual school production and spend the time preparing and rehearsing for the production.
  • Subject Based Electives – students can participate in a range of other activities that do not involve sport or production.

Welfare and personal development: Homework Hub, Maths tutoring, Learning Support programs.

Special features: Annual visits of Chinese students, and school tours to China.

eXcel Program: A maths and science full year excellence program for students who have already demonstrated a very high level of capability in these learning areas. Students engage in a wide variety of learning opportunities which are both rigorously demanding and engaging.

Music Plus: An exciting program which caters for students in Year 7 and Year 8 with advanced musical abilities. Instrumentalists and vocalists are given the opportunity to extend and explore their musical abilities in a range of settings and styles. The class often combines with the Performance Plus class for the production of a show. Entry is via an invitation, based on audition and/or recommendation by a music teacher.

Performance Plus: A program for students in Years 7-10 with a keen interest and talent in the performing arts, allowing them to specialise over a full year in the areas of drama, dance, singing and theatre technology. The Performance Plus classes often join together to present a full public performance.

Mandarin Excellence Program: A language program aimed at students who have advanced language abilities in Chinese Mandarin. Over the full year course students will extend their language abilities, supported by a wide range of ICT programs.
