Choosing A School For Your Child hears from Jonathan Walter, Principal of Carey Baptist Grammar School.
What prompted you to want to enter teaching? My passion for working with people and supporting their growth inspired me to become a teacher. I find it deeply rewarding to help individuals reach their full potential and strive to become the best versions of themselves.
What do you like most about working in a school? We have the unique privilege of shaping the next generation and equipping them with the essential skills they need to succeed in an ever-changing world. Every day we work in an environment filled with energy and hope. We cultivate a genuine spirit of service and support each student to contribute meaningfully to the community and make a positive impact.
What are some of the changes to education that you have witnessed in your time as principal? While serving as principal, I have noticed a stronger focus on holistic education. Schools are increasingly dedicated to developing all aspects of a child’s growth. Although academic success remains crucial, it is no longer seen as the sole preparation for what lies ahead. There is now wider acknowledgment that fostering creativity, teamwork and adaptability is just as important as traditional academics in readying students for the future. Advances in technology also enhance our ability to tailor learning experiences to individual needs.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?The most rewarding aspect of my role is creating the right environments for students to grow. It is incredibly meaningful to help each student discover who they are, identify what truly matters to them, unearth their passions and clarify their values as they prepare for life beyond school.
What are some special achievements of your staff, students and the school that you are most proud of?One of our proudest achievements over the past six years is the development of new ways to measure our students’ broad range of skills and capabilities, beyond just academics. In partnership with The University of Melbourne and other schools, we helped create the Australian Learner Competency Credential (ALCC). This credential highlights vital human and creative skills such as collaboration, critical thinking and community contribution that are essential for future success. Now all of our graduating students will receive both the traditional ATAR and ALCC, giving a more complete picture of their strengths and readiness for the world ahead.
What hopes do you have for the future of your school?I hope our school continues to evolve as a hub of learning for the entire community, where everyone is supported to grow, develop new skills, find their passion and feel empowered to make positive contributions to society.
What is your motto for running a successful school? My motto for a successful school is “high expectations with great care”. By holding each other to high standards and supporting every member of our community with compassion, we help everyone achieve their best.
