Northern Beaches Christian School (NBCS) is an independent, co-ed school for students from Pre-Kindy to Year 12 that supports and encourages learning, growth, wellbeing, connection and belonging within a Christian community.
NBCS was established in 1981 by a group of parents with a vision to build an exceptional Christian School on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Since its first day, the flexibility and faith, creativity and community values of our founders have underpinned the growth of the school.
Our mission: Excellence in Education, Christianity in Action
Motivated by God’s love, we are intentional about creating a positive learning culture and growing young people who will make a positive impact. We strive to build a culture that values academic excellence, gives students a sense of belonging and connection, and equips them with the character attributes and skills to prepare them for the adventures and challenges of life beyond school.
Our vision: Love Learning
At Northern Beaches Christian School, learning is at the heart of everything we do. In a world that is constantly changing, a young person who is a learner is equipped for life and can step into the future with confidence.
Facilities
Inspirational, sustainable, beautiful learning spaces
Students and staff have the privilege of learning in multi-award-winning, architecturally designed spaces. Light-filled facilities and lush gardens exist alongside bespoke learning spaces, a state-of-the-art performance hall, two beautiful libraries, a newly-completed STEM building, the ‘Manhattan’ senior study area, and ‘the City’ – the vibrant centre of the school complete with exceptional café. Sustainability is built in with a sophisticated building management system that reduces our environmental footprint. Our challenging Primary playground allows children to manage risk while embarking on adventures together. NBCS is surrounded by bushland, giving students a peaceful space to breathe and play, while still being within easy reach of the Northern Beaches and upper North Shore, with excellent bus connections.
Curriculum
School readiness and specialist teachers in Pre-K
Our Little Learners Pre-K class for 4- and 5-year-olds draws the best from the Early Years Learning Framework and the Early Stage 1 curriculum to provide a nurturing, play-based environment that builds confidence, sparks curiosity and teaches compassion, ensuring children will be ready for ‘Big School’. Specialist teachers bring French, creative and performing arts, sport and music to the class, and children enjoy a Bush Kindy program.
Primary and Secondary
As well as the key learning areas of the NESA Curriculum, all Primary students learn French. Years 1 to 4 take part in our music instrumental program. In Secondary, students are offered an increasing array of electives beginning in Year 8, leading to a wide choice of HSC courses. NBCS offers many opportunities for students to excel, including acceleration, rich extension projects, and academic competitions.
Christianity at NBCS
NBCS is a Christian school that warmly welcomes all families. All our staff are Christians who seek to share the beauty of faith in Jesus. Everyone is on a faith journey and our hope is that when students leave our school, they understand the Christian message and leave with open hearts. Our chapels, Christian Studies classes, mentors and service projects are at the heart of our Christianity program.
Evidence-backed, explicit teaching model
At NBCS, we want students to love learning. That’s why we bring the very best in evidence-informed teaching and learning to every classroom. We have high expectations and encourage students to give their best – because when quality teaching and genuine effort combine in a supportive culture, success follows.
Co-curricular opportunities
Primary and Secondary students are offered a wide range of choices in performing arts, creative arts, drama and music, as well as sport, STEM and interest groups. In Secondary, the annual Broadway musical is a highlight of the year. Students also take part in the unique ‘Student Opportunity Week’ every year, where they choose from over 15 special-interest programs. Global interest tours, including an annual United Nations leadership conference to New York extend student learning beyond our borders.
Sport
In Primary, sport classes with a dedicated PE teacher cater for varying abilities and interests. Seasonal sport choices and representative pathways for students who excel are offered from Years 3-6. In Secondary, a comprehensive program of sporting activities and opportunities take place weekly.
A comprehensive program of optional sporting opportunities take place before and after school. Representative sports teams also play interschool competitions during the school day, leaving weekends free for family and community participation. NBCS is a member of the Christian Schools Sports Association (CSSA) with over 80 member schools. Students can advance to state and national level competitions through the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) pathway. Talented athletes are supported to pursue representative sporting commitments outside school.
Student Welfare Programs
Forming confident, capable young people
At NBCS, we prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child. In partnership with parents, our student wellbeing program builds belonging and resilience, setting our students up to be confident and capable. Every Secondary student is part of a supportive weekly mentor group. From Pre-K to Year 6, we explicitly teach friendship skills using the URSTRONG program – helping students resolve conflicts, and grow in confidence, communication and resilience.
