Developing athletes on and off the field

For young athletes, sporting development is about more than improving skills or achieving results. It also involves building discipline, resilience, teamwork and the confidence to pursue personal goals.

The Broughton Sports Academy at Broughton Anglican College brings these elements together through a structured program designed to support students both on and off the field. The aim is to give motivated students access to purposeful training within their school environment, while ensuring their sporting ambitions remain part of a balanced education.

The Academy currently offers specialist programs in basketball and football for Secondary students. Participants receive high-performance coaching, strength and conditioning training, opportunities to compete, and guidance to help them balance their academic, sporting and future career goals. Nutrition workshops and sports camps further support the development of well-rounded athletes and encourage positive, lifelong habits.

The Basketball Academy is led by former Australian representative and 14-season NBL veteran Tim Coenraad. Drawing on his extensive playing experience, Tim helps students develop fundamental and advanced skills while deepening their understanding of the game. The program includes focused training sessions and gameplay, with Academy students representing Broughton at MISA basketball and representative gala days and competitions.

The Football Academy is delivered in partnership with Pro Soccer Hub and led by experienced player and coach Sash Drijovski. Students take part in high-level coaching that develops their technical ability, game knowledge and capacity to take greater ownership of their sporting development. They also have opportunities to represent the College in football and futsal competitions, including the Bill Turner Cup, CIS Cup, NSW Futsal, CASA Gala Days and MISA.

Dedicated strength training sessions are held before school in the College gym. Led by qualified strength and conditioning coaches Alex and Tiarna Marek, these sessions use tailored programs to improve strength, fitness and athletic performance while developing correct technique and reducing injury risk. Training alongside like-minded peers also builds motivation, consistency and a strong sense of team.

By combining expert coaching, competitive opportunities and holistic support, the Broughton Sports Academy gives students an environment in which they can challenge themselves and reach towards their potential. Just as importantly, the program develops qualities that extend well beyond sport: commitment, perseverance, leadership and the ability to work effectively with others.

As the Academy continues to develop, Broughton Anglican College plans to expand its sporting offerings and explore future opportunities for Junior School students and athletes competing in individual sports.
