At Frensham, we believe that learning and friendships flourish when young people are fully present. A year ago, we introduced a policy for students in Years 7–9 replacing smartphones with simple call-and-text handsets. This was not about restriction, it was about creating space for focus, wellbeing, and connection.
Research consistently shows that limiting smartphone and social media use in schools has measurable benefits. Students report improved focus and engagement in the classroom, especially in subjects that demand sustained attention such as mathematics and science. The effects are most pronounced when devices are fully removed from immediate reach, rather than simply switched off or kept in bags.
Wellbeing is another clear gain. Studies indicate reductions in stress and anxiety when social media use is limited, particularly among adolescent girls. At Frensham, we have observed these benefits first-hand: calmer classrooms, more attentive students, and boarding houses where friendships grow naturally.
Our approach also strengthens the culture of care. With fewer opportunities for online conflict, incidents of bullying, both online and face-to-face, decline. Students have more time and energy to engage in shared activities and conversations. Families report that their children return home more relaxed and happier.
This policy is part of a wider commitment to digital wellbeing. Alongside the phone policy, Frensham integrates media literacy and guidance on healthy technology use, helping students develop the skills to navigate a digital world safely and thoughtfully. By embedding these practices in the school culture, we equip young people to make informed choices about technology as they grow.
At Frensham, our phone policy is a deliberate choice to prioritise connection and meaningful learning. One year on, we see students more engaged, more connected, and more confident in themselves. For families considering a school that nurtures curiosity, resilience, and authentic relationships, this approach reflects what has always set Frensham apart.
