School Choice hears from Stephan Munyard, principal of Bayside Christian College.

What prompted you to want to enter teaching?
I was drawn to teaching through my love of Biology and Science, but even more so through my desire to work with young people. I found great joy in helping students build confidence and resilience, especially when tackling challenging scientific concepts.

What do you like most about working in a school?
I enjoy the tremendous diversity of the job. Beyond knowing my areas of Science, each day brings a range of scenarios requiring teachers to wear many hats: counsellor, nurse, tech support, performer, organiser, psychologist, problem-solver and more. Above all, I value the sense of community. Schools are vibrant places where young people grow, explore purpose, and discover their potential. Being part of that journey is a privilege.

What are some of the changes to education that you have witnessed in your time as principal?
Education has seen a greater focus on student wellbeing, differentiated learning, values formation and the thoughtful integration of technology to personalise learning while maintaining strong human connection.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing young people grow and develop as whole people — academically, spiritually and personally. Watching a student thrive or a teacher grow in confidence and skill gives deep meaning to the work.

What are some special achievements of your staff, students and the school that you are most proud of?
I’m proud of contributing to healthy school communities where staff and students set high expectations and achieve more than they imagined. Our dedicated staff, resilient students and flourishing community reflect a commitment to growth, whether through academics, creativity, service or spiritual development. Each milestone demonstrates faithful stewardship of the gifts and opportunities entrusted to us.

What hopes do you have for the future of your school?
That we remain a Christ-centred community where students feel safe, known and equipped to serve confidently in a changing world. While keeping all the great components we already have, I hope that we can lift our academic standards where students are continually challenged to achieve their best.

What is your motto for running a successful school?
“No surprises.” “Fair and firm.” “Every day is a gift.”
