As Year 12 students prepare for life beyond the classroom, the possibilities ahead can be both exciting and daunting. University, apprenticeships, employment, travel and gap years all offer different opportunities, but knowing where to begin isn’t always easy.
At St Michael’s Collegiate School, a new initiative, Beyond the Bell, is helping students explore those possibilities through meaningful conversations with experienced adults who share a special connection with the school: they are Collegiate alumni.
Having once sat in the same classrooms and navigated their own transitions beyond school, these mentors bring more than professional experience. They understand the unique position Year 12 students are in and can share the lessons, decisions and unexpected turns that have shaped their lives since leaving Collegiate.
The program connects students with alumni for two planned face-to-face meetings, with the option of a third. Students have the opportunity to ask questions, learn about different industries and career pathways, and gain insight into the world beyond school. Conversations might explore university study, apprenticeships, employment, entrepreneurship or taking time to discover new interests before making a decision.
Rather than providing all the answers, mentors encourage students to think broadly, explore their strengths and approach their futures with greater confidence. The aim is not to find the perfect pathway, but to help students recognise the possibilities available to them and feel better equipped to take their next steps.
Beyond the Bell is also a meaningful expression of Collegiate’s values in action. It recognises the courage of Year 12 students who put their hands up to meet someone new, step outside their comfort zones and remain open to different experiences and perspectives.
Equally, the program reflects the compassion of our alumni, who generously give their time, knowledge and experience to support the next generation. By returning to connect with current students, they continue their relationship with the Collegiate community and help ensure that the support and encouragement found at school can extend into life beyond it.
Beyond the Bell strengthens the connection between past and present generations of Collegiate students. It is an opportunity to share wisdom, broaden horizons and build confidence at an important moment in a young person’s life.
Because preparing for the future isn’t always about finding the perfect answer. Sometimes, it begins with a conversation with someone who has walked a similar path and can help a young person see what might be possible.
