A New Generation of Independent Schooling

Rivercrest Christian College opened its doors for the first time in 2014

Hillcrest Christian College, an established educational institution for over 30 years, has launched a ‘New Generation of Independent Schooling’. This brand-new school, Rivercrest Christian College, opened its doors for the first time in 2014. Over 100 students from Early Learning through to Year 1 eagerly attended their first classes in late January.

Head of College, Dr Michelle Cafini, stated “Rivercrest is an exciting educational option for parents in the City of Casey. Rivercrest offers a curriculum that is grounded in 21st-century thinking, where all facets of education are connected and interlinked. It will embrace an inquiry approach to learning within the context of a Christian worldview. Learning is engaging, relevant, meaningful and significant.”

Rivercrest students are encouraged to see themselves as global citizens. In addition to acquiring knowledge, they are encouraged to recognise both the contribution they can make and the responsibility they have to engender greater harmony among the people of the world. They will be respectful, compassionate, lateral thinkers who, although prepared to challenge prevailing ideas, will also be reflective and sensitive. Students will be people who are able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with others. They will be challenged to become globally-minded citizens who epitomise Christ’s commission to love and serve others.

“This year the college offers classes for three- and four-year-olds in our Early Learning Centre, as well as classes for Prep and Year 1 students. Additional year levels will be added each year. Construction of Stage 2 has commenced and the building — to house Prep-Year 2 classes — will be completed for the start of the 2015 school year. Rivercrest will eventually offer classes from ELC right through to Year 12,” added Dr Cafini.

Twenty-first-century students need to be creative, flexible, independent thinkers, hence the curriculum at Rivercrest utilises an inquiry learning approach, with students as active partners in their learning. There is a strong environmental focus within the curriculum, with Information Technology integrated into learning experiences. Rivercrest Christian College is a candidate school offering the International Baccalaureate’s ‘Primary Years Program’.

To facilitate learning, buildings accommodate the needs of the learner. The College has developed a master plan which details the development of the College through to Year 12. Future facilities include:
• A Foreign Language Laboratory
• An Environmental Centre
• A Leadership and Society Hub
• An Experimental Science Centre
• An Inquiry Centre
• A Technology Hub
• An Applied Mathematics Centre
