Where Curiosity Leads the Way: A Day in the Life of Sophia Mundi’s Primary Children

There’s a quiet hum of creativity in the air as the morning sun spills through the windows of Sophia Mundi Steiner School. The cows in the meadow peek into our Prep room and our Class 2 and 3 children pause to hear the swish of a horse’s tail. Our neighbour, the Collingwood Children’s Farm, is a constant source of joy and inspiration.

Nestled within the historic Abbotsford Convent and its vibrant Art Precinct, the school is surrounded by gardens, galleries and studios, where creativity and culture thrive side by side. The atmosphere is alive with a sense of possibility, a place where children can feel connected to both the natural world and a broader artistic community.

In the primary classrooms, children are not just learning, they’re living their lessons. One moment, a group is carefully drawing a scene from a folk tale; the next, they are outside, digging in the garden and discovering the hidden life of the soil beneath their hands. Imagination and curiosity guide every activity, bringing lessons to life.

“At Sophia Mundi, our approach engages the whole child,” explains Principal Natalie Jensen. “We aim to cultivate intellectual curiosity and creative thinking while supporting the development of emotional awareness, social understanding and personal resilience.”

The rhythm of the school day is intentional. Academic lessons flow seamlessly into creative arts, music, movement and outdoor exploration. Seasonal festivals mark the passing of the year, weaving a sense of wonder, community and connection to the natural world into every child’s learning journey. Children learn to notice the changing seasons, care for plants and animals and celebrate the beauty of everyday life around them.

Small class sizes are intentional and mean teachers know each child as an individual, tailoring support to strengths and challenges. Students are encouraged to solve problems creatively and collaborate meaningfully. They are given space to grow at their own pace while developing the confidence to take on new challenges.

Parents can observe the growth and engagement in their children. Children arrive eager to learn and leave inspired and ready to explore. By the end of the primary years, students emerge not only academically capable but curious, compassionate, confident and prepared to navigate the next stage of their education and life itself with integrity and joy.

In a world that often prizes speed and standardisation, Sophia Mundi offers something rare: a place where learning is a journey not a race, and where every child is seen, heard and inspired to flourish.

“The magic happens when children are allowed to explore, create and connect at their own pace. That’s when true learning takes root.”
