Barker’s New Centre of Movement and Learning Opens

Opened in June 2020, Barker College’s new centre of movement and learning has been developed with an understanding of the powerful role the physical school environment plays as an educator – communicating Indigenous recognition, civic mindedness, sustainability, landscape awareness, and engagement with sport.

The Rosewood Centre provides five court spaces, gym and exercise spaces, rooms for dance, general-purpose teaching areas, a café, viewing platform and parking for more than 170 cars.

The centre allows the school to showcase sporting events, hold full school assemblies and gatherings, as well as providing a space for the wider community to access. Careful thought has been placed on the design of this space so that it blends into the existing landscape and respects the way in which the environment shapes down the hill, and the way in which light operates across the surface of the school’s grounds.

The building is environmentally sustainable, and features more than 500 solar panels. The Rosewood Centre maximises the use of natural light and water-efficient appliances have been used throughout. More than 185,000 person hours were invested in its construction.
