From Country, All Stories Begin: Celebrating International Day at IGS

Igs (7) 20

International Grammar School (IGS) brought its vibrant community together to celebrate International Day, one of the school’s most anticipated annual events. The celebration showcased the cultures, languages and perspectives that define life at IGS, reflecting the school’s long-standing vision of Unity Through Diversity.

This year’s theme, From Country, All Stories Begin, recognised that the rich diversity celebrated at IGS is grounded in the enduring cultures and languages of Australia’s First Nations peoples. Acknowledging Country as the foundation upon which all journeys, identities and stories unfold, the theme also reflected the school’s commitment to embedding First Nations perspectives across learning. This commitment has been further strengthened through the introduction of Dharug as a Year 7 language, providing students with the opportunity to engage with the language and culture of the land on which the school stands.

The day began with whole-school assemblies featuring student leaders, cultural performances and guest speakers before students participated in a diverse program of immersive workshops and activities. Experiences included Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese and Spanish language and cultural workshops, Aboriginal art, storytelling, traditional games, dance, music, sport and creative performances. Designed to foster curiosity, empathy and intercultural understanding, each activity encouraged students to engage meaningfully with cultures and perspectives from around the world.

A highlight of the celebration was the transformation of the school’s rooftop into an international marketplace. Families, students and staff enjoyed authentic cuisine from around the globe, with food stalls hosted by IGS’s Parent & Carers community creating opportunities to connect, share traditions and celebrate the diversity that is central to life at IGS. The event reflected the strong partnerships between the school and its families, whose enthusiasm and generosity contribute to the success of International Day each year.

For families considering IGS, International Day offers a clear lens into the school’s distinctive approach to education. Language learning and intercultural understanding are embedded throughout the curriculum, giving students authentic opportunities to develop global perspectives from an early age. Beyond learning additional languages, students are encouraged to appreciate different cultures, embrace diverse viewpoints and build meaningful connections across communities. Through experiences such as International Day, IGS nurtures confident, compassionate and globally minded young people who are well prepared to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
