MELBOURNE GIRLS' GRAMMAR

Melbourne Girls’ Grammar is a dynamic learning community with the reputation as a leading boarding school for girls in Australia. The school has provided boarding opportunities for rural Australian girls since it was established in 1893. Drawing on a large catchment of boarders primarily from rural Victoria and southern NSW, the school has valued its long association with rural Australia as a means of bringing a unique diversity to school life and enriching the character of the student population. The school‘s curriculum encourages critical and creative thinking and the love of learning. Their focus is the development of young women with the confidence, skills and experience to excel in life beyond school. Leadership, team-building, social and cultural awareness, and a strong sense of personal self-worth are crucial components of an education at Melbourne Girls’ Grammar.

Facilities: The Senior School (Years 7 to 12) and Boarding Houses are located in Anderson Street South Yarra. Melbourne’s domestic and international airport is 20 minutes by car from this inner-city school while the nearby interstate rail terminus, Southern Cross Station, is linked to the school through metropolitan train and tram services. The Senior campus provides a chapel, gymnasium, a new library, a new dining hall, a Science Futures Centre, assembly hall, art school and music complex, tennis courts, an excellent hockey field and a rowing facility located nearby on the banks of the Yarra River. The recently renovated boarding house (which caters for approximately 95 students) and the administration unit are also located on the Senior School Campus.

Boarding facilities: The Boarding House, renovated in 2009, offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere in which the students can grow in self esteem and reach their full potential in all areas of school life. The younger boarders are accommodated in rooms of four which encourages them to live co-operatively with one another. Year 11 students are allocated double rooms. To further strengthen the bonds between boarders, the grouping of students in each room is changed periodically. In their final year of school, the Year 12 boarders are assigned their own rooms. Within the House there are several laundries, kitchens for casual snacks and common rooms where students are able to share experiences and relax. For Senior students, prep is undertaken in their own rooms and at the younger year levels, students study in the Library with a tutor, thus developing sound, disciplined study habits for senior years.

Curriculum: A broad, rich, liberal curriculum is available from Kindergarten to VCE. University enhancement subjects and Mandarin Chinese, Italian, French and Latin are part of the curriculum. The use of notebook computers is an integral part of the curriculum from Year 5 onwards. There is an educational extension program at Years 7 to 10. Opportunities are available for students to study in France, Italy, China, Japan and England. Excellent academic results, high levels of artistic and cultural achievements and a supportive pastoral care program are all features of this vibrant inner city school.

Sport: The comprehensive program, with inter-school and inter-house competition, includes swimming, athletics, netball, softball, hockey, volleyball, gymnastics, tennis, rowing, snow sports, badminton and cross-country. Broad participation and elite sports performance are encouraged.

Co-curricular activities: Music activities include a variety of choral and orchestral groups and an inter-house music competition. Annually, the school presents several drama productions and an inter house drama festival. Other activities include debating, public speaking and social service.

Student welfare programs: House Tutors, year-level co-ordinators, directors of students and the deputy principal work together with teaching staff to promote student wellbeing. The international student co-ordinator, director of students (residential) and boarding house staff help students to manage the challenges of living away from home. Specialist support staff also include a school chaplain, school counsellors, careers counsellor, head of extended curriculum, head of learning strategies, individual differences staff and health officers. These staff are committed to student wellbeing; assisting students to make good decisions, gain personal skills, build confidence and self-respect and reach their academic potential.
