MITCHELTON STATE HIGH SCHOOL

Mitchelton State High School is located on a leafy, 11-hectare site with landscaped grounds and well developed sporting facilities. The school has exceptional technology facilities with students excelling in the tertiary entrance Overall Positions (OPs). The school’s vision focuses on continuously improving practices and curriculum to skill students for a workforce five years in advance. The motto “Mens Sana in Corpore Saho” – A Sound Mind in a Sound Body – indicates that emotional health of students is very important to the school and community.

The school’s values of Respect, Participation, and Accountability were developed by the student body of 2002. They are the life blood of the school community. Students and staff live and breathe these on a daily basis. They help to develop positive attitudes and build character.

Mitchelton is a Band 9 co-educational secondary school with a current enrolment of approximately 450.

Facilities: Multi-media laboratories, a modern library, industrial arts, science, performing arts, and specialist rooms, air-conditioning is provided to more than 50 per cent of classrooms, newly refurbished hall for indoor sports, large stage area for productions, undercover forecourt area.

Subjects/Electives Years 7 to 10: Business, Dance, Drama, English, Home Economics, Health & Physical Education, Industrial & Graphics, Japanese, Mathematics, Music, Science, Studies of Society & Environment, Visual Art.

Year 10 electives: Childcare Studies (Certificate III in Children’s Services) and Land Management (Certificate I in Conservation & Land Management).

Subjects/Electives Years 11 and 12: Year 11 and 12 students study six subjects, selected from a wide range of offerings which include authority registered subjects as well as vocational education and training certificate courses, traineeships and apprenticeships offered both through the school and external training providers. The study of English, English for ESL learners or English communication is compulsory and a mathematics subject is highly recommended.

Sport: Mitchelton State High School successfully blends excellence in academic performance, and sports.

Welfare and personal development: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander liaison officer, Defence transition mentor, Guidance officer, School Chaplain, School-based youth health nurse.

Special features: State-of-the-art technology, one computer to every 1.8 students and global access available through internet links in every classroom, thirteen classrooms with multi-media facilities, roll marking is processed through the wireless network laptops, flexible timetables, tertiary pathways, apprenticeships and traineeships, an inclusive pastoral care program, strong links with defence families and an internationally accredited student program.
