Melbourne Montessori College

Founded in 1974, Melbourne Montessori College (MMC) is an independent, co-educational school that offers Montessori education in Melbourne, to children aged from 18 months (walking) to 18 years. Our programs include Parent and Toddler playgroups, an Early Learning Program, a Junior School and a Senior School.

Our Senior School also offers the globally recognised International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for students who are in Years 11 and 12.

We have two main campuses — one in Caulfield and one in Brighton. Each campus has age-appropriate outdoor spaces with interesting play equipment and features and our classrooms are equipped with specially-designed Montessori materials.

Play and learning environments are carefully prepared for each young person’s developmental level, allowing them to take responsibility for their own education within Montessori schooling. As a result, our students develop a life-long passion and curiosity for learning.

All classes at MMC are multi-age, so each child can learn from the people around them and develop at their own pace, both socially and intellectually.

In the Junior School, children usually stay with the same teacher for three years, fostering strong teacher-student connections and ensuring teachers develop a deep understanding of each student’s personality, strengths and interests.

Curriculum

MMC has been delivering outstanding Montessori education programs since 1974 and is the largest Montessori school in Australia. We guide our students to become inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are well equipped for their life journey, and offer the IBDP for Years 11 and 12.

The Junior School at MMC is unique in its integration of three leading educational frameworks: the Australian Curriculum (ACARA), the Montessori Curriculum and the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). These are woven together in our primary classrooms to provide a comprehensive and personalised education.

Our highly qualified Junior School educators hold dual accreditation — through the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and Montessori-specific training — ensuring both academic rigour and a deep understanding of child development.

Cycle 1: Ages 3 to 6 (Kindergarten and Prep)

In the Children’s House, children work with specially designed Montessori materials across language, numeracy, practical life and cultural exploration. The multi-age setting encourages mentoring, collaboration, and social-emotional development. Through real-world tasks — like food preparation, plant care, and group storytelling — children learn responsibility and self-regulation. These foundational years are marked by joy, deep concentration, and a growing sense of independence.

Cycle 2: Years 1 to 3

Students begin to think more abstractly and collaboratively. Academic exploration deepens as they build on foundational knowledge in mathematics, language, geography and science. Mixed-age classrooms support peer-to-peer learning and reflection. At this stage, children are eager to understand fairness, community, and their place in the world — themes which are naturally explored through stories, research projects, and small group discussions. Educators support growing autonomy while nurturing empathy, ethics and teamwork.

Cycle 3: Years 4 to 6

Children transition toward independent learning and abstract thinking. Projects become more complex, interdisciplinary and self-directed — incorporating science, geography, history, mathematics, and research. Leadership roles become more prominent, and students regularly take initiative in classroom routines, group work and presentations. Cycle 3 learners begin making meaningful connections between academic content and real-world relevance, preparing them for a confident and smooth transition into adolescence and secondary education.

Montessori Adolescent Program — Cycles 4 and 5: Years 7–10

As students begin the secondary phase of their life’s journey, it is important that they are supported yet challenged and inspired.

Our Adolescent Program provides a unique framework of academic rigour that encourages students to embrace and understand connections between traditional disciplines and the real world in a way that is relevant and stimulating. It enables them to evolve their knowledge identity and direction in life and to engage in purposeful and meaningful work in preparation for adult life.

Small classes and individual attention help nurture students as they transition into adulthood.

The Montessori National Curriculum* is delivered through connections to a farm, local organisations and businesses. All subjects taught are assessed against the Australian Curriculum standards.

International Baccalaureate — Cycle 6: Years 11–12

Sharing core values and an educational philosophy similar to Montessori, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme offers a holistic approach to education. It encourages students to pursue rigorous study, to become active and compassionate lifelong learners and fosters greater global understanding.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core. Students select subjects from areas such as Language and Literature, Business Management, Humanities, the Experimental Sciences, Mathematics, Film and the Arts. Through the Diploma Programme core components, students learn to reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake projects that involve service to the community and experiential learning.

VCE VM —Cycle 6: Years 11-12

Options available to our students as they finish their secondary education are wide-ranging and diverse. The VCE VM is an applied learning program available to all Year 11 and 12 students. It provides hands-on, vocational learning choices to help prepare students for professional life.

Our students are motivated and mature individuals who are capable of rational and critical thought and who take responsibility for their learning. The skills they develop are highly valued by employers and tertiary institutions alike.

Whether they pursue tertiary studies at a university or TAFE, undertake vocational training, seek an apprenticeship, or enter the workforce, all students work with our careers counsellor to develop their individual future pathway.

Student Welfare programs

Student wellbeing is central to our educational mission. Our strategic plan prioritises creating a safe, supportive environment where every student feels valued. We work closely with students to improve their learning spaces and we ensure that wellbeing is a key focus across the school.

We’ve enhanced our student support system by introducing a dedicated psychologist and a wellbeing coach, both of whom offer essential mentoring and counselling services.

Our teachers receive specialised training in student wellbeing, which is integrated into our curriculum, ensuring it remains a core aspect of the Melbourne Montessori College experience.
