Mackay North State High School offers a wide range of experiences and opportunities available for students, both within the school curriculum and through extra-curricular activities. With a school population of more than 1400 students, Mackay North State High school enjoys an excellent reputation in the Mackay community and is characterised by outstanding achievement in the academic, cultural and sporting arenas.

The staff is extremely committed towards ensuring students achieve to their highest potential. The P & C is very supportive and has worked hard to ensure students have access to excellent facilities. Facilities: Three sporting ovals including running track and cricket practice nets, extensive terraced seating with shade sails overlooking the oval area, 25-metre on-site in-ground shaded swimming pool, 250-seat university-style auditorium, professional stainless steel catering kitchen and mock-up restaurant, 11 dedicated computer laboratories, school-wide digital classrooms including interactive whiteboards, projectors and complete wireless coverage, multi-functional school hall including a stage for Performing Arts and modern climbing wall for Physical Education students, professional Performing Arts room for Dance, Drama, Music and Band practice, shade structures and seating for the comfort and safety of the student body during recesses.

Subjects/Electives Years 7 to 10: Core subjects – English, Maths, History, Science and Physical Education. Elective subjects – Advanced Manufacturing & Design, Art, Applied Art, Business Principles, Computerised Business Applications (Level 1 and 2), Dance, Drama, Drawing, Extension Technology, Geography, Graphical Communication, Home Economics, Information & Communication Technology, Japanese, Media Studies, Music, Product Design & Manufacture.

Sport: A strong sporting tradition exists with many opportunities for team or individual sports for all year levels.

Extracurricular activities: Instrumental Music program, Marching Band, Rock Pop Mime, Fanfare, school musicals, choirs, Rock Eisteddfod, the Eisteddfod and school concerts. Students participate in academic competitions such as the Australian Mathematics Competition, debating and Optiminds. Opportunities exist for Special Education students to take part in athletics competitions for students with disabilities, life skills and excursions.

Welfare and personal development: Guidance Officers, Community Education Counsellor, Instrumental Music teachers, Special Needs teachers, Computer Administrator, Administration Staff, Teacher Aides, School Facilities Officer, Groundsperson, Cleaners and other support staff, Special Education Program in dedicated Special Education Unit, School Nurse, school-based Police Officer, tuckshop convenors and voluntary helpers, access to visiting staff for Hearing, Visually and Physically impaired students, migrant education and other special services.
