Students thrive in St Andrew’s Cathedral School’s innovative learning environment.
At St Andrew’s Cathedral School, we make the middle years matter. We believe a great education is transformative and every child is infinitely precious, so we celebrate each student’s unique gifts and abilities, meeting each child where they are at.
An International Baccalaureate World School with a comprehensive teaching and learning model, we are experts at the ‘craft of the classroom’, with a focus on teaching both character and expertise. This combined with our wonderful team of award-winning staff, create many exciting opportunities for student extension. From Ms Bindi Jarvis, this year’s ‘Rising Star’ award winner, to Ms Amanda Hogan, 2025 NSW Leader in ICT, our teachers are driving innovation in the Independent school sector.
Our Deputy Head of Quality Teaching, Dr Kirsten Macaulay has been named one of Australia’s best educators and our new Head of High-Performance Athlete Development and Coaching, David Moore, is a former NSW state cricketer. In addition, nine of our outstanding educators were honoured at the annual Teachers’ Guild Awards 2024 for their continued commitment to quality teaching.
The calibre of our staff, combined with over 25 years of coeducational experience means pastoral care and wellbeing programmes are strongly embedded, and girls and boys alike benefit from a seasoned team through those all-important teenage years. Our expert teaching staff have a collective drive to make a difference, use innovative teaching methods and have a clear vision of what it takes for middle schoolers to succeed into the senior years. These are essential qualities needed to guide and care for students in a successful transition to senior schooling, where students can choose between our IBDP and HSC offering.
Our focus on literacy, through the Visible Literacy Initiative, has led to exceptional NAPLAN results in Years 7 and 9. There has been continued growth in the writing domain, which assesses how effectively students use language to express their ideas and numeracy results continue well above state averages. Our Middle School teachers maintain a balance of handwritten and typed work in the classroom, with teachers ensuring students’ workbooks are a useful learning tool, providing a good record of their progress.
Alongside access to the best quality education, students have the opportunity to engage in our world class performing arts programme, a wide range of sport, co-curricular activities and grow through our sector leading outdoor education programme.
It is through this diverse range of experiences that we foster the development of our students’ character, which is at the heart of our teaching and pastoral care. We teach this both explicitly and implicitly, through habits and routines, role-modelling, service opportunities, leadership and relationships.
Our hope is that through the firm foundations laid in Middle School, students will be thoroughly equipped with the skills and confidence to succeed in their senior years at school and beyond, producing adults with a life-long love of learning.
