ST BEDE’S COLLEGE

St Bede’s College serves the Catholic community of Mentone and nine other designated parishes in the immediate vicinity. The college is conducted in the Lasallian tradition, which means that there is a strong emphasis on religious education and that boys of all abilities and economic backgrounds are welcome. The curriculum is therefore designed to engage the most intelligent minds and to support those who have lesser academic ability.

Facilities: St Bede’s College is situated on beautiful grounds overlooking Port Phillip Bay. Science, computer and technology areas represent the latest in educational planning. Classrooms are airy and spacious. Drama and music flourish in more garret-like surroundings. The college campsite is situated above Smiths Beach on Phillip Island.

Curriculum: Religious education is compulsory at all year levels. The courses are those mandated by the Archdiocese of Melbourne. A wide variety of subjects is available. French, Indonesian and Italian are currently on offer. Vocational Education and Training is available for Years 11 and 12. Accelerated learning is available from Year 9. The college offers the VCAL.

Sport: St Bede’s College is a member of Associated Catholic Colleges. This association provides the opportunity for sporting and cultural competition at the elite level. Boys are encouraged to participate at a level appropriate to their abilities.

Extra-curricular activities: Activities designed to augment the religious education and community service programs are integral to the life of the college. Music tuition and membership of concert and rock bands is encouraged. Public speaking and debating are pursued in intra- and inter-school competitions. Outdoor education camps are conducted for Years 7 to 10.

Student welfare programs: While St Bede’s College has a large enrolment, personal attention is ensured through a strong welfare infrastructure. Boys are divided into home-rooms and tutor groups. Identity and belonging are reinforced through the promotion of class and house representation. The college has two full-time professional counsellors. An anti-bullying policy is strictly enforced. Relationships between students and staff are characterised by respect, co-operation and consideration for others.
