NOBLE PARK ENGLISH LANGUAGE SCHOOL

Founded in 1980, the school provides an intensive English language course for newly arrived, non-English-speaking migrants, refugees and private students. The course introduces students to the Victorian system of education and the Australian way of life. Teaching staff are supported in their role by Multicultural Educational Aids. Class sizes are to a maximum of 15 students. The course is normally for six months. However, some students may stay for up to one year. After completing the course, students proceed to a mainstream school or TAFE.

Curriculum: Primary classes are organised according to age levels with specialist classes in Computers, Art, Music, Physical Education and Library. Secondary students are divided into two groups according to age and classes are organised according to the students’ language proficiency level. There are specialist classes but the basis of the curriculum is English language acquisition. Students are given a basic grounding in subject areas outlined in Victorian Essential Learning Standards. Specialist classes across the school emphasise the language and skills of Mathematics, Computers, Science, Drama and Physical Education. Excursions, careers education, expos, camps and concerts form a significant part of the curriculum in keeping with the Principles of Learning & Teaching (PoLT). At the completion of the course, students are assisted in their transition to mainstream schools. Careers counselling is also available to students.

Student welfare programs
: There is a significant, well-established welfare program for students and families linking them to support agencies in the community.
