NEWINGTON COLLEGE

Newington College has motivated boys of all faiths and denominations since it was founded in 1863. The four pillars — academic rigour, sporting excellence and creative arts alongside pastoral care and spiritual development — provide the foundation for a liberal education that allows students to flourish in a variety of fields. There are two Preparatory Kindergarten to Year 6 schools — Wyvern House at Stanmore, and Newington Lindfield Preparatory School on the North Shore. As part of the emphasis on providing an internationally recognised education, Newington has introduced the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program for Years 11 and 12 study as an alternative to the HSC.

Welfare and personal development: Two counsellors work with the chaplain, heads of each campus and housemasters in leading the pastoral care program. The secondary campus is divided into a Middle School (Years 7 to 9) and Senior School (Years 10 to 12) to cater to the varying needs of developing adults. These structures focus strongly on pastoral care and oversee the welfare, progress and behaviour of all boys with specialist tutors at each level to provide individual care. The college feels it is essential for staff and parents to work together to foster each child’s development.

Special features: With a dynamic blend of tradition and innovation, Newington utilises the high-quality physical environment of the school and the experience and dedication of the staff to prepare boys for the challenges ahead. Boys are encouraged to undertake activities outside their academic studies that develop initiative, leadership and teamwork. HSC students continue to gain excellent ATAR rankings. Generous scholarships — academic, all-round, creative arts — are offered into most secondary years.

Famous ex-students: The Hon Justice Roger Giles AO (Royal Commissioner), Nick Farr-Jones, Phil Kearns (Australian rugby captains), Phillip Dutton (Gold Medal Olympian, Atlanta and Sydney), Alex Popov (designer), Neil Perry (restaurateur), General Sandy Pearson (Commander, Australian Task Force, Vietnam), David Johnson (former MD, Campbell’s International), H M George Taufa’ahau Tupou IV (King of Tonga).
