ASHWOOD COLLEGE

Ashwood College is a medium-sized school; large enough to operate an extensive program yet small enough to give each student a special place in the community. Uniform is compulsory.

Facilities: The spacious landscaped grounds include a unique wetland nature reserve and many sports fields. Computer laboratories, extensive library facilities, a music and new performing arts complex and modern technology workshops support a relevant and innovative learning environment. A $2m Science Centre has been approved and the college has been prioritised for further modernisation under the Federal Building Futures Program.

Curriculum: The curriculum for Years 7 to 12 covers the eight Key Learning Areas and provides a strong background in the traditional disciplines. French and Chinese, plus a broad range of subjects in the Arts, Design and Technology are core subjects in Years 7 and 8 and electives in Year 9. The unique “I can” program at Year 9 aims at improving student engagement while The Work Experience and Vocational Education programs at Year 10 have been extended with more use of local business links. VCAL provides for an alternative pathway for VCE for students in Years 11 and 12. Year 10 is linked to Years 11 and 12 allowing students to choose one or more VCE subjects. The college has a strong International Students program. All students are encouraged to excel. Catering for individual differences is the school’s first priority and acceleration courses and enrichment classes are offered.

Extra-curricular activities: Instrumental and vocal music, annual musical and dramatic productions, inter- and intra-school sport, and a strong camps and outdoor education program are part of an extensive extra-curricular program.

Student welfare programs: A strong pastoral care system and a supervised homework program after school. Students are actively encouraged to take up leadership positions through a House system, the Student Representative Council and peer support. Parents are closely involved with their child’s progress and college activities.
