Newington College is a K-12 day and boarding school for boys located in Stanmore, in the heart of Sydney’s Inner West. Founded in 1863 on principles of inclusivity and diversity, Newington College has grown over the years and now has three campuses: Stanmore K-6, Lindfield K-6, and Stanmore 7-12. For Newington’s headmaster, Dr David Mulford, “the very essence of Newington that was created so long ago still exists today; you can feel it as you enter any of the college’s three campuses. At the core of this is giving all the boys the opportunity to achieve their personal best – in every area of school life.”
Newington is a dynamic college which prides itself on a liberal policy of innovation. The college is always researching new and innovative ways to educate young men and to support them to discover what’s possible. Five pillars of distinction help to mark out the unique qualities of a Newington education: an excellent learning and teaching program; an emphasis on wellbeing, character and service to others; an engagement with spirituality, values and ethics; a diverse range of exciting co-curricular opportunities and a strong emphasis on community.
A non-selective school, Newington embraces students from all backgrounds and faiths and encourages them to achieve their personal best. It aims to provide an internationally respected education with the purpose of developing young men who will contribute positively to society. To this end, the college proudly offers both the Primary Years Programme and the International Baccalaureate Diploma as well as the HSC.
Newington’s world-class facilities offer boys the best opportunities for learning and encourage them to discover what’s possible. They include extensive sporting facilities for all major and minor sports, dedicated learning centres, a newly built drama theatre, a visual arts centre with a specialist photography and digital media studio, an art gallery and a Music Centre. The college places a big emphasis on learning through technology. Not only are ICT and AV facilities found in all classrooms but the college also supports a part Supplied part Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program that enables boys from Years 5-12 to use laptops and iPads anywhere to enrich their classroom experience. On top of this the college also provides an IT help bar and training centre.
The college provides opportunities for students to experiment and thrive in a large and varied range of co-curricular activities. Boys combine academic life with a seemingly limitless number of sports, arts, outdoor education and hands-on learning programs that are designed to complement their studies. They are supported and encouraged in the journey to discovering their own unique passions and interests.
“It has been our tradition, for more than 150 years, to never forget the responsibility that parents place in our hands,” says Dr Mulford. “We have never lost sight of the role we play – to ensure our Newington boys enjoy their life with us, and then look back on it as a time when they forged friendships, learned many lessons and truly did discover what’s possible – in a unique and stimulating environment.”
