Oxley College blitzing basketball

Former Oxley Basketball Academy members, Aiden Ceh and Ben Ursich, have won scholarships to study and play basketball in the United States. (Aiden {No.11} and Ben {No.35} pictured centre)

The pair, who finished Year 12 last year, were part of the College’s successful Basketball Academy which has now seen several students receive the much-coveted overseas scholarships.

Aiden Ceh received a scholarship to the University of Great Falls in Montana, while Ben Ursich was offered two scholarships and chose the offer from Georgia Regents University on the East coast of USA.

Oxley Senior Basketball coach Stephen Frigo, who coached the boys, said he was delighted with the news.

“I have had the pleasure of coaching these boys for three years as members of the Senior Boys Basketball Team. During that time, our team saw great success in not only winning three consecutive EISM Premierships, but never actually losing a game,” Mr. Frigo said.

He said both Aidan and Ben played pivotal roles in Oxley’s success on the basketball court.

Aiden, who started playing in the Under 18 Warrandyte Venom team as a 15-year-old, will finish up at his local club before he heads overseas. Aiden also represented Oxley for the Victorian Christian Schools state team as a point guard and team captain. He was named MVP for his efforts.

“He always demonstrated very good ball control and was gifted at reading the flow of the game and positioning himself effectively around the court. He was also never shy to try and take one of his beloved 3 point shot.” Mr. Frigo said

Meanwhile Ben has been playing in the SEABL and VYC leagues for Kilsyth Cobras, where he has been referred to as the VYC leagues ‘best two-way player’.  Ben was also a formidable player in the EISM basketball competitions.

Mr. Frigo said Ben always had incredible speed and agility and was able to split the defence whenever necessary.

“He was a nightmare for any opposition player. His vertical leap was amazing and he would always poll a high number of rebounds,” Mr. Frigo said.

Mr. Frigo said he knew if these boys applied themselves, a scholarship to an American College was a very real possibility.

“They have both worked very hard to have been afforded these opportunities and I wish them all the very best as they start these new exciting chapters in their lives.”

Oxley Christian College is very proud of both Aiden and Ben and we wish them great success in their basketball endeavors as well as their College studies.
