The opening of a new campus comes with much thought, planning and excitement. Fostering spirit and honouring history within Holy Eucharist was an important consideration from the beginning. An opportunity was recognised to create a memorial to honour former collegians who gave their lives in conflict overseas.
The concept of a permanent wreath evolved with 51 poppies, each one representing one of ‘our fallen boys’. The students at Holy Eucharist assisted with the construction of the wreath. Not just any wreath was constructed, but the material to make the poppies was none other than a quintessential symbol of Melbourne and the Aussie spirit, old VFL footballs.
On Remembrance Day, as Mr Chris Martin and Mr Ryan McDonough (both old boys of the college) read the honour role, a student placed a poppy on the wreath. These poppies, as well as the ‘ribbon’ made from an old college blazer, will form part of a permanent memorial at Holy Eucharist in 2020.
