Located on Sydney’s North Shore, Barker College is an Anglican day and boarding school. In 2016, the school announced plans to become fully coeducational by 2022. Girls will now be accepted into Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten from 2018, from Year 3 in 2019 and in Year 7 in 2020.

The broadly based curriculum is designed to offer significant choice of subjects and courses to meet a wide range of individual student interests and abilities. Barker’s dedicated teachers nourish the soul of each and every student and help them to find knowledge from information and wisdom from knowledge.

Barker students continue to demonstrate that cooperation is more effective than competition in high-performing schools, with the 2016 Year 12 cohort achieving outstanding HSC results. For the seventh consecutive year, a Barker student attained the maximum possible ATAR. In addition, 45 per cent of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or more and the school scored a record 553 Band 6s by 190 different students, including 70 Band 6s in Advanced English.

Barker is focused on the future. We want all our students to come together to make the world a fairer place and this commitment to justice and equity begins at school. The students are at the heart of Barker’s work.

Barker aims to provide a framework for young people to experience the best that the future offers – more than that, to become people who shape this future rather than merely people who consume it.

Facilities: Barker has been located on its current 50-acre site since 1895 and successive generations of leaders and families have contributed to the beautiful campus seen today. Construction will begin on the new Prep School towards the middle of 2017. This exciting development will bring the youngest members of the Barker community within the fold of the Junior School. Flexible and engaging spaces will provide the Prep students with every opportunity to begin their Barker journey in the best possible learning environment. A state-of-the-art, purpose-designed and -built Sports Complex will provide five court spaces, gym and exercise spaces, rooms for dance, general-purpose teaching areas, a café, viewing platform and parking for more than 150 cars, when completed by 2020.

Student wellbeing: The school is big enough and diverse enough for everybody to find their place, but the pastoral care system is well enough articulated to ensure individual care. The pastoral care system sees the welfare of students as the responsibility of all staff, with key staff in House and Year leadership roles having overarching responsibility for students’ care. The school’s focus is on the wellbeing of the whole student; the academic, personal and social. Students attend chapel once a week. Students are placed in houses (Junior and Middle School) and tutor groups (Senior School) and attend a house/tutor period once a week as well as a pastoral care period once a week. Well-established formal policies on discipline and dress are enforced.

Special features: Barker’s academic program is a whole-school Pre-K to Year 12 approach to learning. The curriculum is rigorous and values inquiry, thinking and understanding. The teaching staff at Barker are committed to a whole-school approach to curriculum development and delivery, unified by a shared sense of purpose as expressed in Barker’s Mission and Vision. Tours of the school are conducted regularly; please visit the website for further information.
