ASSUMPTION COLLEGE

The year 2011 marks the 118th year of Catholic education at Assumption College, Kilmore. Located within an hour’s drive of Melbourne, Kilmore provides a wonderful rural environment as well as excellent recreational services, including a golf course, leisure centre and indoor heated swimming pool. While the school was founded initially for local area boys, it now caters for boys and girls from the local area as well as an ever-expanding number of regional areas in southern Australia.

Facilities: Recent developments at the college have seen the completion of the Hermitage Arts & Technology Centre and a new science and language facility for Year Nine students.

Curriculum: The agricultural and horticultural studies program was recently expanded and there has been continued growth of the VET in Schools program as well as the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning and an increase in the number of school based apprenticeships. These developments are assisting students to gain the broadest possible education to equip them for life. More than 30 VCE studies are available to senior students.

Extra-curricular activities: Assumption offers a wide range of sporting and cultural pursuits. Assumption is a member of premier competitions in both boys’ and girls’ sport. Drama, debating and music are other popular pursuits that students can take up at the college. The success of the school in many of these pursuits is unparalleled in any other Victorian school.

Boarding facilities: Boarding is an integral component of the changing face of Assumption College. The boarding house is able to cater for 142 boarders (91 boys and 51 girls). The school promotes close links between boarding and teaching staff, which enables the monitoring of each student’s academic progress. Supervised study times and on site tutors ensure that each student can reach their full academic potential. Boarders have computer access in their dormitories, with links to the school network and internet access, thus enabling them to complete work commenced in the school day, in the dormitory during their study time at night. Because of the college’s close proximity to Melbourne, students are able to take advantage of the many educational and recreational opportunities that exist in a capital city. These opportunities are not always available to families from isolated or smaller communities. The boarding facilities enable young people from these communities to avail themselves of these opportunities, while in a secure, supervised environment.
