Public transport in Melbourne is excellent. It is reliable, safe, and for students with a concession card it is inexpensive. Public transport also ensures the students become independent and organised so they are on time for school. It means students do not need to lug heavy bags for long distances and it is economically and environmentally responsible for our community. Many independent schools are located in Kew, where there are established train and tram routes. There are many school bus routes from Warrandyte, Eltham, Doncaster and even North Fitzroy that now drop students at the front door of their school. This ensures safety and reliability, but often these buses run on a limited timetable. The National Bus Company and Panorama Coaches provide excellent services.
Public transport may not always be the most suitable option, especially for that early morning swimming or music lessons, or after-school rehearsals or sports practice. For these, students should organise lifts with friends or parents.
However, when looking at schools, parents should keep in mind the bus routes, trains and trams so their son or daughter can travel easily, independently and safely to and from school. Travel time is where they meet their friends, chat — and maybe even read a book.
