There are 2500 schools in Victoria; approximately 1375 are located in Melbourne. These comprise a range of schooling options, the majority of which are provided by the Victorian government. The government school system educates and supports all students to help them reach their full potential.
Catholic schools comprise the next largest group, followed by independent schools. Both of these systems are privately run but regulated by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. They follow the same curriculum as government schools but are responsible for their own management.
Melbourne is also host to several independent schools offering Christian-based education as well as Steiner and Montessori schools.
The majority of Victorian and Melbourne schools are co-educational, with a small number offering single-sex education.
